About the museum

The Jõhvi Museum Society was founded in 2000 with the aim of developing the fortress church museum in St Michael’s Church in Jõhvi, presenting the history of Jõhvi Parish and promoting the cultural heritage characteristic of the Jõhvi area. St Michael’s Church is Jõhvi’s oldest building and Estonia’s largest single-nave church; its thick walls and fortification elements make it the best-protected fortress church in Estonia.

The museum is in the vaulted cellars beneath the altar, which are connected to the upper church by narrow wall passages. In the first cellar room there is a model of the church in its form before the Livonian War, as a fortress church surrounded by a defensive rampart. The west wall of the cellar is covered with a glass painting that tells of the tragic events of the Livonian War and the legend of two brothers (author Kai Kaljo).

The archaeological finds come from the graves of the ancient nobles and military leaders of Jõhvi and Lüganuse parishes; the oldest iron objects in Estonia, from the Jäbara burial grounds, and the Alulinn votive finds deserve special attention. The next cellar room is a restored medieval crypt chapel, which contains the mosaics of Eva Jänes. A six-language audio guide narrates the exhibits to the visitor.
