About the museum
Sillamäe was a closed town in the Estonian SSR, but this is only one of the many faces of Sillamäe. The new permanent exhibition of the Sillamäe Museum, “Salapärane Sillamäe” (Mysterious Sillamäe), opened on 12 March 2024 and consists of two interconnected parts.
The first part is in the exhibition hall on the museum’s ground floor, where the historical layers of Sillamäe are connected and an overview of the formation and development of the place from its first mention to the present is given. The second part is in an outdoor area built in front of the museum, where the visitor finds themselves in an apparently idyllic recreation area of the early 1950s. There is a children’s play area called Päikeselinn (Sun Town), a pavilion and period sales carts, and in the middle of the idyll two black boxes that hide the concealed secrets of the totalitarian regime.
The museum is near the seafront promenade and offers schools and kindergartens educational programmes and VR programmes. It is also possible to order a guided tour of the town.
