About the museum
Vaivara Parish suffered war damage as early as 1941, and fierce battles were fought here from February to September 1944. The local researcher August Martin wrote in 1970 that eight months of front line had completely destroyed Vaivara. The Sinimäed Museum views the events of the Second World War from an Estonian perspective.
The museum’s exhibition building is a renovated manor barn, which opened its doors in 2008. The museum displays weapons, uniforms, personal items of soldiers, wartime photographs and propaganda posters of the opposing sides.
In addition to the exhibition, the museum offers excursions and programmes. The historical trail at Sinimäed presents the fortifications of three ages: the defensive rampart from the time of the Great Northern War, underground ammunition stores from the end of the Tsarist era, and the sites of the 1944 battles. Guides and tour leaders can be booked for both walking and bus excursions.
