About the museum
The new guardhouse of Kadriorg Palace was built in 1828 on the orders of Emperor Nicholas I, to a design by the architect Christian Meyer. It is the only purely Classicist building in the Kadriorg palace ensemble: a small building of one and a half storeys, whose main façade is designed with a three-part open vaulted arcade. The colours of the building, lime grey and white, followed the two-tone style preferred in St Petersburg.
The park museum and library have been housed in the building since 2006. The museum collects park plans, photographs, newspapers, magazines, posters and memoirs, and organises thematic exhibitions, such as photo exhibitions, flower festival garden projects and presentations of the roses growing in the park. The specialist library on the first floor was created from the bequeathed collection of the Finnish landscape architecture professor Tuula-Maria Merivuori and contains more than 3,200 items on landscape, park and garden architecture, botany and horticulture.
