About the museum
Keila-Joa manor was probably founded at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1827 Aleksander von Benckendorff acquired the manor and had a new main building constructed to a design by the St Petersburg architect Andrei Stackenschneider. The Neo-Gothic palace was completed in the spring of 1833, and Emperor Nicholas I was present at its consecration. Later the manor belonged to the Volkonskys until the land reform after 1919. In the 20th century military units used the building, and it began to decay. Since the restoration that began in 2010, the palace has been open to visitors.
The permanent exhibition in the museum presents the history of the palace. The fashion history museum shows clothing and haute couture from different eras; the exhibitions are produced in cooperation with the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation. Visitors can also learn about the palace with a free two-part audio guide.
