About the museum
The museum grew out of the Mõniste local history circle, whose founding meeting took place on 22 October 1948 on the initiative of Alfred Lepp. The circle collected ethnographic and historical objects from the area and opened a self-help local history museum in the Mõniste Rahvamaja (community house). On 6 February 1955 the museum moved to its present plot; the buildings there had been built by farmers as a shop of the Mõniste Tarvitajate Ühisus (consumers’ cooperative), a barn and a shed. The first open-air museum exhibit building, a barn house, was brought there in 1956. On 24 April 1957 the museum received state museum status as a branch of the Valga Rajoonidevaheline Koduloomuuseum (Valga Interdistrict Local History Museum).
From 1961 to 2015 the museum was a branch of the Dr. Fr. R. Kreutzwaldi Memoriaalmuuseum. On 1 January 2015 it received its present name and became part of the museum department of the Võru Instituut (Võru Institute). In 2016 the former shop premises were restored as the Mõniste Tarvitajate Ühisus shop and the shopkeeper’s living quarters. The museum’s well-known educational programme is Päkapikumaa (Elves’ Land), which has existed since 1997.
