About the museum
The Okase Muuseum is a private museum that grew out of the art collection of the artist Evald Okas (1915–2011) and his family. In 1999 Okas bought the historic building on Karja street in Haapsalu’s Old Town; in 2000 the family founded the MTÜ Evald Okase Muuseum to run the museum, and the museum opened in June 2003 as a summer gallery. The building has previously housed, among other things, a tavern, a guesthouse, a hospital and a kindergarten.
After a two-year renovation the museum reopened in July 2024, and it can now operate all year round. The building also hosts courses, concerts and events.
On the first floor there is a permanent exhibition of Evald Okas’s work, presented as a timeline from his youth to the end of his life; on the ground floor, exhibitions change.
