About the museum
The Aitoneva bog has been used for peat production since the 1940s. The Aitoneva Peat Museum in Kihniö tells of the history and use of peat production, the development of the industry, environmental management and the significance of bogs for Finland.
The outdoor machinery exhibition on the museum grounds presents machines from the production history of the bog, the oldest of which date from the 1940s. The environmental trail presents a restored peat production area and the dragline bucket used in the production of sod peat (palaturve), and along the trail there are information boards about the plants and animals of the area. The Aitotorni bird tower stands by a wetland, which serves both as an afteruse of the peat production area and as a water treatment structure. The area also has two laavus (lean-to shelters). The site belongs to the Lauhanvuori–Hämeenkangas UNESCO Geopark and to the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH). The area is maintained by Kehitys-Parkki Oy, which is owned by Neova Oy.
