About the museum
The Kihniö object museum was founded in 1945 in a loan storehouse (lainamakasiini) near the church. The storehouse was built in 1921 and is protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency (Museovirasto). The museum is owned by the municipality and run by its education and culture department.
The collection contains over 2,500 objects, mostly from the 19th century, and includes a few objects from the Stone Age. Most of them were collected by the merchant Tarmo Markkula, and the collection comes mainly from his home region of Satakunta. The collection includes, among other things, Matti Haapoja’s pocket calendar, the altarpiece and bell of Kihniö church, agricultural and household tools, weapons, and a bed from the time of the Great Wrath (isoviha). A large part of Markkula’s collection relates to local farming, hunting and fishing.
