About the museum
The Parkanon kotiseutumuseo operates in a stone grain storehouse built in 1890, next to Parkano church. Objects were collected for the museum in the 1950s, and the museum opened to the public in 1958.
The lower floor displays the section on Baron Gustaf Wrede af Elimä of Parkano, as well as a Parkano bedroom and main room with their tools. The upper floor holds a substantial collection of old objects from Parkano church, which recall, among other things, a lightning strike that hit the church belfry at Midsummer, 24 June 1928.
The museum’s special features are the tools of village cobbler Hilja Mäkinen and municipal midwife Anna Helminen, an exhibition showing how pettu bread (pettuleipä) is made, and a copy by Germund Paaer of Gallen-Kallela’s The Defence of the Sampo (Sammon puolustus).
