About the museum
Amos Rex is an art museum in central Helsinki beside the Lasipalatsi (Glass Palace), which opened in 2018. The museum lies largely underground beneath Lasipalatsi Square, and the concrete mounds rising from the square are a trademark of the building. The museum is connected to the Bio Rex cinema. The project was financed entirely by the owner, the Föreningen Konstsamfundet (Konstsamfundet Society).
The museum’s predecessor, the Amos Anderson Art Museum, operated from 1965 to 2017 in the residential building on Yrjönkatu completed in 1913. The publisher and art lover Amos Anderson had stipulated in his will that his home should become a museum. He died in 1961, and the Konstsamfundet he founded set up the present museum and still maintains it.
The collection focuses on Finnish art of the 20th and 21st centuries and comprises about 6,000 works: paintings, sculptures, photographs, textiles, furniture, glass and ceramics. The oldest works come from the Anderson collection, and the museum is also known for European sacred art. Recent acquisitions have focused on new and contemporary art. All the exhibition spaces are on the lower ground floor.
