About the museum
Automuseo Myllyn vanhat autot is located in Ylämylly in Liperi, about 13 kilometres from Joensuu. The museum is run by the Hirvonen family, and the company behind it was founded in 1998. The restoration of old cars began at the end of the 1960s, when a newspaper article about a restored Buick inspired the family to start. The first cars were completed around 1970, and the collection has grown steadily since then.
The museum's exhibition premises of more than 2,000 square metres were acquired in 1996, and the museum opened to the public in summer 1999. In the first exhibition season there were about 1,000 visitors, and by 2002 almost 2,000.
The collection includes more than 400 vehicles, mostly passenger cars, as well as more than 100 motorcycles and mopeds, tractors and lorries. The museum also displays a large collection of model cars, radios and televisions, and boat engines from Helin Konepaja. The Room of Memories (Muistojen huone) contains midwifery equipment, household objects and tools from the 1940s to the 1970s. In 2017 the museum was named Vehicle Museum of the Year.
