About the museum
Wanha Automuseo is a car museum located at Välikangas in Ylämylly, Liperi. It is run by the Pohjois-Karjalan Automobiilikerho ry (North Karelia Automobile Club), an association of Joensuu enthusiasts of old vehicles. The club was founded in 1978, and having its own museum was the club members' goal from the start.
The present museum building, about 1,000 square metres, rose on a plot bought by the club members; the building materials, collected as donations, were put up by voluntary work in summer 1979. The museum opened in November 1979, after only a little over seven months of construction work.
Most of the vehicles on display are owned by the club's members. They represent models that have been driven on North Karelia's roads in the past: the stock ranges from mopeds to passenger cars, buses and lorries. The most valuable single car is a 1911 model Opel Torpedo, and also on display is Joensuu's first driving-school car.
