About the museum
Heiska artist’s home is a building more than a hundred years old in Jyväskylä, right next to the Aalto2 museum centre. The painter Jonas Heiska (1873–1937) lived there with his family, and the house’s objects, art and photographs tell of the life of an artist’s family over two generations. The home has been preserved as an atmospheric journey into the family’s everyday life.
Jonas Heiska was born in the village of Oravasaari in Toivakka. In his art he depicted above all the landscape of Central Finland, ordinary folk life and his home city of Jyväskylä. His work has been described as lyrical mood pieces, and warm humour is especially evident in his works on the theme of Seitsemän veljestä (Seven Brothers).
The artist’s home operates as a small museum of the Keski-Suomen museo (Central Finland Museum). It can be visited on a pre-booked guided visit, which starts in the lobby of the Aalto2 museum centre.
