About the museum
The buildings of the Käsityöläismuseo, the Kuparisepän talo (Coppersmith’s House) and the Puusepän talo (Carpenter’s House), stand in the old courtyard of Toivola in central Jyväskylä. They were built in the 1840s and are among the oldest residential buildings in the city centre. Jyväskylä itself was founded in 1837.
The museum tells of the everyday life, work and leisure of 19th-century craft families. In the Kuparisepän talo, visitors can consider how the large coppersmith family of Sjöblom fitted under one roof with a journeyman, an apprentice, a tenant and customers coming to do business at the house.
The museum is run by the Keski-Suomen museo, and admission is free all year round. The Käsityöläismuseo is linked to the Museokauppa Sparvi shop, whose workshop space hosts free open workshops.
