About the museum
The Jyväskylän taidemuseo is located in the city centre at Kauppakatu 23, in the Säästöpankki (Savings Bank) building beside Kirkkopuisto (Church Park). The museum’s exhibition space, called Holvi, is in a commercial and residential building, and good landmarks include the city church, the Kirkkopuiston bistro and Kain Tapper’s granite sculpture Yö (Night) at the edge of the park. The museum is maintained by the City of Jyväskylä.
The museum’s changing exhibitions combine contemporary art phenomena, art from Central Finland, and Finnish and international printmaking and drawing. The extensive art collections present art from Central Finland as well as domestic and international printmaking. The museum focuses on the accessibility of art and on audience participation.
On the second floor there is the art space Ilmiö (Phenomenon), where visitors can sit, play and explore art phenomena; the museum also has the city’s attractive art toilets. The museum shop sells local art books and products. The art museum also runs the Grafiikka- ja valokuvakeskus Ratamo (Ratamo Graphics and Photography Centre) at Veturitallit (Locomotive Sheds).
