About the museum
Hertonäs manor in eastern Helsinki is already mentioned in the sources in the Middle Ages. The manor’s present main building was originally built as a tile works. In the 1810s Vice Admiral Carl Olof Cronstedt had it rebuilt as a main building in the Neoclassical style, to designs by Pehr Granstedt. The estate later changed hands several times. After the death of the last estate owner, John Bergbom, in 1917, the estate centre with the main building and park was donated to the association Svenska Odlingens Vänner i Helsinge.
From 1925 the manor house served as the Topeliusmuseum, and since the 1970s it has been a manor museum. The museum also includes the Knusbacka allmogemuseum, a Baroque park and an English park. In 1922 a windmill was moved to the estate from Täktom, and it has become a landmark. The museum and parks are owned and maintained by the association Svenska Odlingens Vänner i Helsinge r.f.
Visitors can move around the site on their own using an e-guide and map. Guided tours are included in the admission price, and the museum welcomes booked groups all year round. A restaurant, Gamla Kvarnen, is located in one of the manor’s outbuildings.
