About the museum
The Museum of Nursing Education presents the history of nursing education in Helsinki. The museum is run by Metropolia ammattikorkeakoulu (Metropolia University of Applied Sciences) and is located on the first floor of building B on the Myllypuro campus.
The exhibitions tell of the life and career of Florence Nightingale, the life of resident students in the student hostel, the origins and development of training for midwives, nurses and public health nurses, and the specialist fields of nursing. Displays include photographs, teaching charts, books, uniforms and insignia; the oldest photographs date from the 1890s. The museum rooms are furnished in the style of the 1940s and 1950s.
The school’s first head, Aino Durchman, began in 1936, and she was later awarded the Florence Nightingale medal for her life’s work. In the museum visitors can play a museum game on mobile devices. A virtual museum of six rooms has been planned, but its opening date has not been announced.
