About the museum
Kustaa Hiekka (1855–1937) was a goldsmith who passed his master's examination in Pori in 1878 and later settled in Tampere. He founded Suomen Kultaseppä Oy in 1898, and he is regarded as one of the founders of Finland's precious metal industry. Hiekka sat on the Tampere city council for 32 years and took part in founding the Hämeen museo, which opened in 1908.
In the 1920s Hiekka began planning his own museum so that his art collection would stay together. The neoclassical house on Pirkankatu was completed in 1928 to the drawings of architect Oiva Viljanen, and Hiekka lived there until his death. The house museum opened to the public in 1931.
The collection includes art and objects. In addition to paintings, the basic exhibition contains furniture, silverware and ethnographic objects. The works date from the 1630s to the 1950s, and most are by Finnish artists. They include F. von Wright, Munsterhjelm, Gallen-Kallela, Edelfelt, Halonen and Enckell, as well as Tampere artists such as Gabriel Engberg, Kaarlo Vuori and Lennu Juvela.
