About the museum
The Motor Museum is located in the harbour area of Alholmen in Jakobstad and is Finland's largest museum of boat engines. The collection includes about 250 inboard and outboard engines. Of the 18 types of boat engine manufactured in Jakobstad between 1917 and 1960, as many as 17 are represented.
Among the most remarkable items is a ring engine with six ring-shaped pistons, made in Jakobstad in 1934 and reported to be the only one of its kind in the world, as well as an outboard engine from 1917 with a wooden frame and a chain-driven propeller.
The museum also displays some 50 unique motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles with auxiliary motors and velocipedes of classic makes such as AJS, Ariel, BSA, NSU, Zündapp, Victoria, Douglas, Panther, Terrot, Harley-Davidson, Maico and Jawa. In the basement is the old workshop interior of the glazier and mechanic Emanuel Lillkvist, including a small lathe from the late 19th century.
