About the museum
The museum railway Nykarleby Jernväg brings the old Kovjoki–Nykarleby line back to life. The line was in use 1899–1916. Construction began in 1897, the locomotives came from the USA and the carriages from Germany, and the 12.5 km line opened in October 1899. The railway was expensive to build, and it was difficult to make the operation profitable.
Today steam locomotives pull antique passenger carriages over a two-kilometre stretch of 600 mm narrow-gauge track at a speed of about 20 km/h. It is one of Finland’s smallest railways. The hall, which serves as both engine shed and workshop, contains among other things a steam locomotive from 1935 that hauled lime in Pargas, motor locomotives from Denmark and England, and one of the original carriages of Nykarleby Jernväg from 1901.
The old station building houses Café Emma, with 19th-century furniture and an art exhibition on the walls. The grounds include a playground with a railway theme. Next to the station area is Kovjoki Museigård, a local heritage museum with agricultural tools, everyday objects, miniatures of old houses in the village and photographs. The Museigård is open at the same time as the trains run.
