About the museum
The Jan Karlsgården open-air museum was founded in the 1930s and was named after the farm Jan Karls in Finström, from which the main farmhouse comes. The museum shows how an Åland farm may have looked in the second half of the 19th century.
Today there are some twenty buildings on the site, all moved here from different parts of Åland. Together they give a picture of Åland’s building and domestic culture and of the surroundings in which Ålanders lived and worked.
The museum holds activities in both summer and winter. Craft days are held every Wednesday in July, and since the 1940s it has been a tradition to raise a midsummer pole here on Midsummer Eve. The annual Lillajul market is Åland’s largest Christmas market.
