About the museum
Bomärket is a museum about bomärken, the old owner's marks that farms and crofts on Åland used. Göran Dahl has been collecting bomärken since the 1970s and founded the museum in 2015 on the family farm Cederbergs in Ovanåker in Saltvik. The collection includes objects from roughly half of Åland's some 1,500 farms and crofts, and the museum has Åland's largest collection of bomärken.
The origin of the bomärken is unknown, but they have been in use for at least 2,000 years. In the past, all farms in the same district had to have different marks, and when farms were divided, new marks were created by altering the old ones. Dahl's documentation consists of some 10,000 bomärken shown at life size, with careful information on their origin, and the marks can be searched by village name and farm or by appearance.
Beside the museum stands a windmill from 1801 in its original condition, which visitors can enter.
