About the museum
The Kaskinen fishing museum was founded in 1983, when the town of Kaskinen bought the salting house of Kurt Koskinen in the old Kalaranta. The building had housed Oskar Koskinen’s fish shop from the 1910s until 1978. The Kaskinen fishermen’s guild had already collected objects illustrating fishing traditions before that.
The exhibitions are arranged by theme: Baltic herring fishing, whitefish and salmon fishing, stream fishing and seal hunting. On display are the objects and tools used in fishermen’s homes and shore sheds, as well as an extensive photo collection. Baltic herring fishing takes up a lot of space, as it was once the town’s most important livelihood. The ground floor has large fish traps and various nets; the upper floor has themed exhibitions and photographs.
Along the shore near the museum there are some thirty well-preserved fishermen’s storehouses (aitta), most of them from the 19th century. On the hill are drying racks used for drying nets, and nearby is a memorial to the eleven fishermen who drowned in the storm of 1854.
