About the museum

Öjskogsparken is the museum area of the Närpes local heritage association in Närpes. The area is built as a compact farming community and has more than 20 historical buildings and museum spaces, from a farmstead and a schoolhouse to a pharmacy and a village store. Many of the buildings have been moved here from other parts of Närpes.

Bengtsgården is an 18th-century farmstead that originally stood in Näsby. The art brothers Carl and Oscar Bengts grew up here; the farm became a museum in 1955 and was moved to Öjskogsparken in 1973. The village store from 1895 was moved here in 1972 and became a museum in 1974; it has more than 700 objects, most of them from the time before the Second World War. The Apotekare Källströms apoteksmuseum (Apothecary Källström’s Pharmacy Museum) is one of Finland’s largest and is furnished as a pharmacy from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

The newest museum, Stella Polaris, is about the top-secret operation in which a large part of Finland’s military signals intelligence was moved to Sweden from the village of Nämpnäs in September 1944. The agricultural museum is shown in one of the old grain storehouses on the church hill, and a museum greenhouse shows traditional tomato growing during the growing season. Events such as a midsummer picnic, theme days and a Christmas market are held during the year, and in summer theatre is performed at the rotating stand.
