About the museum
The idea of a town museum in Kaskö was born as early as 1917, when many donated objects were kept in the town’s storerooms. In 1974 volunteers founded the Kaskö hembygds- och museiförening (Kaskö Local Heritage and Museum Association) to look after the collections, and in 1982 the museum opened to the public in the restored property at Rådhusgatan 48.
The building is the home and business premises of shipowner, factory owner and merchant Carl Daniel Renström, dating from the 1850s. The twelve rooms tell of the town’s history: there is a burgher home with a furnished hall and parlour, the ship broker’s office, a kitchen and a maid’s room from the early 20th century, and works by local artists, among them Thure Georg Sundell. The textile collection of hats and costumes that belonged to burgher families is especially valuable, and among the objects are rarities that were owned by the town’s founder, Peter Johan Bladh.
In the yard there is a punch veranda, and in 2023 a fisherman’s cottage from 1839 was moved there; it is furnished as a fisherman’s home. The association has also had two animated films made about significant people in the town’s history.
