About the museum

The Kotiseutumuseo Muina is a cultural-historical local museum in Vasarainen, Rauma, owned and maintained by the Kotiseutuyhdistys Muina ry local heritage association. The museum’s activities focus on the cultural heritage of the villages of Vasarainen and Soukainen.

Behind the museum is the Vasarainen Youth Association, founded on 7 April 1945, whose activities from the outset included local heritage work and the preservation of tradition. The windmill of the museum area was moved to the site in 1966, and new buildings were moved to the area at a steady pace, among them an equipment shed, a granary, a smoke sauna, a leaf-fodder barn (lehdeslato), a fishing gear store, a residential building and a cowshed-stable-woodshed (navetta-talli-liiteri). The workshop was built in 2015.

The museum area has eleven buildings, seven of which have been moved there from elsewhere. The objects are grouped in the buildings by use, for example objects relating to weaving, the processing of flax and wool, hunting and fishing, shoemaking, household goods and textiles. The collection comprises about 1,900 objects. The museum is open in summer and at other times by arrangement.
