About the museum

Lönnström Art Museum, on the shore of Syväraumanlahti in Rauma, is a private museum maintained by a foundation established in 1987 on the basis of the will of industrial councillor Teresia Lönnström (1895–1986). The foundation’s purpose is to promote knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts. The foundation maintains and adds to its art collection.

The museum’s site is the home museum of Teresia and Rafael Lönnström, which opened to the public in 1988. The house was completed in 1942 as a representative home, where guests often came and parties were held in the hall by the light of crystal chandeliers. Rafael Lönnström, managing director of the Lönnström companies, died in 1943, the year after the house was completed, and Teresia Lönnström led the companies after him and assembled the house’s art collection. In her will Teresia Lönnström wished the house to be preserved as a museum; the furniture and artworks are still in the places where she placed them.

In addition to the home museum, the museum has since 2015 carried out Lönnström projects with artists working in Finland, which are extensive contemporary art projects.
