About the museum
Museokeskus Vapriikki (Vapriikki Museum Centre) opened in autumn 1996 in the engineering-works buildings of the former Tampella factory on the bank of the Tammerkoski rapids. The oldest parts of the buildings date from the 1880s, and the largest exhibition space, a factory hall about 100 metres long and 16 metres high, dates from the 1910s and 1920s.
Tampella made locomotives, turbines and linen damask tablecloths. Textile production ended in the 1970s, and industry gradually left the buildings by the rapids. In 2017 Vapriikki was chosen Vuosisadan museo (Museum of the Century).
The museum centre houses the Pirkanmaan maakuntamuseo (Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum), the Luonnontieteellinen museo (Natural History Museum), the Postimuseo (Postal Museum), the Suomen Jääkiekkomuseo (Finnish Ice Hockey Museum) and the Suomen pelimuseo (Finnish Games Museum), as well as the Vapriikki picture archive. One admission ticket gives access to all the exhibitions.
