About the museum
The Tampere Fire Museum (Tampereen palomuseo) is a specialist museum run by the Pirkanmaa Rescue Service at Tampere’s central fire station. The station was designed by Wivi Lönn, and the Art Nouveau (jugend) building was completed in 1908. The museum was founded in the 1990s by retired firefighters as voluntary work, and the first exhibition was completed in 1998.
The renewed exhibition, opened in autumn 2019, tells the story of firefighting work from the founding of Tampere’s full-time fire brigade in 1898 to the present day. The exhibition has about 150 objects, photographs and videos. They introduce life at the fire station, firefighters’ equipment, the history of emergency care, the changes in alarm systems and firefighters’ inventions.
The museum’s oldest object is a smoke helmet (paljenaamari) acquired for Tampere in 1901. Also on display is a bun-chopping machine (pullanpilkkomiskone), which the fire brigade used to feed the city’s ducks.
