About the museum
The fire museum of the Helsinki Rescue Department is located at the Erottaja rescue station in Kaartinkaupunki. The station, designed by architect Theodor Höijer, was completed in 1891 as Helsinki’s main fire station and is still in use. The city’s professional fire brigade was founded in 1861 and is the second-oldest municipal professional fire brigade in the Nordic countries.
The museum presents the history and development of Helsinki’s fire and rescue services, as well as of ambulance transport and emergency medical care. The exhibition includes old equipment, photographs, scale models and video presentations. The museum also covers fire safety and the present-day work of the rescue department. The museum’s collection includes 35 fire and rescue vehicles, which are stored in eastern Helsinki.
