About the museum
Fornstugan i Esse is a local heritage museum run by the Esse Hembygdssällskap (Esse Local Heritage Society). The society was founded in 1931 to collect old objects and awaken interest in local heritage conservation. The museum area was formerly part of a rectory estate (prästboställe).
The main building is a farmhouse from 1840 that was moved from Lappfors to its present site and opened as a museum in 1957. The house is furnished in the style of the 1850s with objects from Esse. The rounded porch with its light blue ceiling probably dates from the 1600s and comes from Bärklars in Ytteresse. The collections include, among other things, a bridal crown, wooden models of church ornaments, and decorated cradles, woven prams and dolls.
On the farm there are several buildings from the 1700s and 1800s, for example a smoke sauna, a loft, a smithy and a granary, where agricultural and household tools are displayed. A threshing engine made in 1918 and a windmill from the 1800s also belong to the area. The society organises a local heritage festival and craft days in July, as well as community singing and music evenings during the summer.
