About the museum
The Vapaamuurarimuseo is located in a separate flat in the property of the Grand Lodge of Finland (Suomen suurloosi) on Kasarmikatu in Helsinki. It tells of the history of Freemasonry from its beginnings to the present day, with the emphasis on Finnish Freemasonry, which began in 1922.
The museum's collection gives an impression of the founding and development of Finnish Freemasonry. Special attention is given to certain notable members of the fraternity: Jean Sibelius, who composed ritual music for the fraternity, and President Risto Ryti each have their own display case. Also on display are, among other things, Hannes Kolehmainen's awards, Eliel Saarinen's membership application and Paavo Talvela's Masonic briefcase.
Estonian Freemasonry has its own display case, because Freemasonry spread to Estonia after its independence in its Finnish form. The museum's pride is a comprehensive collection of the regalia of all recognised Masonic organisations operating in Finland. Visitors who are not Freemasons are also welcome.
