About the museum
The Pitäjäntupa-museo is located in the centre of Hirvensalmi, in the former pitäjäntupa (parish hall), a large farmhouse built in 1898 that also served as the municipal hall until 1984. The building displays pictures and objects relating to Ahti Karjalainen’s career and, through it, to turning points in Finnish history. Karjalainen was one of the most important politicians of post-war Finland and served as prime minister in 1962–1963 and 1970–1971.
Karjalainen was born in 1923 in Kuitula village in Hirvensalmi, and his childhood home Lepola is now a museum in its own right. From 1957 onwards he served in several governments, including as minister of trade and industry and as foreign minister, and in 1982–1983 he headed the Bank of Finland.
The new permanent exhibition of the Hirvensalmi local heritage museum, “Luonnon kauneus ainainen” (The Eternal Beauty of Nature), tells of cooperation between people and nature. The exhibition explores the history of black alders (tervaleppä), slash-and-burn culture (kaski) and the importance of waterways in Hirvensalmi.
