About the museum
Vanha-Rantalan talomuseo is located near the church village of Pertunmaa. The farm belonged to the same family from 1665 until 1964. The last permanent resident of the house, Maria Puukko, moved out in 1958. In 1934–36 the house was home to a lower primary school, and in 1947–48 to an itinerant school of women’s domestic industries.
The house was converted into a museum in 1968, and at first the Pertun säätiö foundation ran it. The museum passed into the ownership and care of Pertunmaa municipality in 1988. The museum area comprises a farmhouse typical of the region and the storehouses and sauna in the yard, and all the buildings stand in their original positions.
The living room of the main building dates from the 18th century and is furnished in the manner of a farming household. In the newer gable end are the parlour and the bedrooms of the mistress and master, where handicrafts made in the house, such as rya rugs and pile rugs, are on display. In the storehouses, the processing of flax is presented, and in the entrance hall there is a small exhibition on archaeology in Pertunmaa, based on finds from a woman’s grave from around the year 1000 found nearby.
