About the museum

The Miekankoski log-driving museum is located in a genuine logging environment at Miekankoski, about 10 kilometres from the Mäntyharju village centre. When a shortcut from Lake Saimaa to the Mäntyharju waterways was built in 1910, Miekankoski became the junction of two important log-driving routes. A log-driving cabin (uittotupa), a smithy and a storehouse were built on the site, and the present buildings date from the 1940s.

Log driving at Miekankoski ended in 1975, and the area was restored for museum and tourism use in 1990. The log-driving museum passed into the ownership of the municipality of Mäntyharju in 1996. The log-driving cabin now houses a café, and the storehouse next to it holds the log-driving museum's exhibition.

By the Treaty of Turku in 1743, the border between the Swedish and Russian realms was defined to run through Miekankoski, and the site has a memorial to the Treaty of Turku as well as a history board that tell of this. Miekankoski is also known as a rapids fishing spot, and fishing permits are sold at the café.
