About the museum
The Romanikulttuurin museo is a specialist museum opened in 2019 that focuses on Finnish Romani culture and the documentation of its history. The museum was founded by singer Hilja Grönfors and film director Katariina Lillqvist, who had begun collecting Romani culture objects, such as traditional costumes and handicrafts, as early as the 1980s. The museum was officially registered in 2018.
The museum’s collection includes the whole of Katariina Lillqvist’s Romani-themed work: ten films and five radio plays, which tell of the history of the Roma in Finland and in Europe. The museum has cooperated with, among others, the Museum of Romani Culture in Brno, the Romedia Foundation and RomArchive.
The museum organises exhibitions, workshops and concerts in Lapinlahti in Helsinki, at the LaternaRoma gallery in Viiala, and in the Oulu region. The workshops introduce, for example, Romani food traditions and bobbin lace (pitsinvirkkaus).
