About the museum
The Rovaniemi Art Museum opened to the public on 17 October 1986 in a former bus depot built in 1933, which was renovated in the 1980s to plans by architect Juhani Pallasmaa. In May 2011 the surviving part of the depot was restored, which gave the museum more space and gave the Lapland Chamber Orchestra its own premises. The whole complex is called Kulttuuritalo Korundi.
The museum’s collection grew out of the collection of the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, which included more than 500 works of Finnish contemporary art from the late 1940s onwards. Today the museum holds more than 3,500 works. The collections also include those of the City of Rovaniemi, Sipilä, the Finnish Cultural Foundation and Westerlund, as well as the Reidar Särestöniemi collection of the Kirsi and Keio Eerikäinen Foundation. In May 2026 the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation donated 70 new works or sets of works to the collection.
The museum is the regional responsibility museum for most of Lapland, except for the Torne Valley and Coastal Lapland (Meri-Lappi). The museum celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2026.
