About the museum

The Tervolan kotiseutumuseo (Tervola Local Heritage Museum) is in Paakkola village along the Nelostie road, about 10 km from Tervola church village. The museum began in 1951 as a cowshed museum run by the local heritage committee of the Ylipaakkola youth association, and in 1954 the collections were moved to an old loan-granary storehouse from 1868. The museum opened to the public in 1978.

The present museum area took shape in 1975, when school buildings from Paakkola and other buildings threatened by flooding were moved from beneath the Taivalkoski reservoir. The area has about 30 buildings and more than 3,000 catalogued objects, and the emphasis is on agricultural and local heritage objects.

The Kuiri farm presents the traditional Peräpohjola building style, and the Sivakka wilderness farm has, among other things, a rare flood-meadow storehouse (luhtiaitta). The Mustamaa house was built in 1930 and furnished in the style of the 1950s, and the Paakkola school, built in 1906, with its yard forms a school museum. The museum has its own café.
