About the museum
The Saukkojärven kotiseutu- ja koulumuseo (Saukkojärvi Local Heritage and School Museum) is located in Saukkojärvi village, about 20 km north of Ranua church village. The museum operates in the oldest school building of Ranua municipality, which dates from the late 19th century. The main building of the former Saukkojärvi elementary school was completed in 1898, and the school operated until December 1958. The school was first called Simo Ylimaa’s Upper Elementary School, and later it was named the Saukkojärvi School.
The furnishings of the school’s two classrooms and of the teacher’s residence represent the period from about 1930 to 1956. In the museum you can get to know the life of a rural primary school in the 1930s and 1940s, and in the attic there is a broader local heritage exhibition on the history of Ranua.
In addition to the school, the museum area includes a dormitory, a woodshed and a lakeside sauna. The museum is run by the Saukkojärven kotiseutu- ja koulumuseoyhdistys ry (Saukkojärvi Local Heritage and School Museum Association).
