About the museum
The Muotiala entrepreneur and art collector Sara Hildén (1905–1993) founded a foundation in 1962, to which she donated her art collection. In 1975 the foundation and the City of Tampere agreed to establish an art museum and to build a new museum building at Särkänniemi.
The museum opened to the public on 10 February 1979. The building was designed by the office of the architect Pekka Ilveskoski. The museum is run by the City of Tampere and looks after the Finnish and foreign art collection owned by the Sara Hildén Foundation.
The museum presents international modernism and contemporary art in changing exhibitions, which often also include works from the foundation’s collection. There is a sculpture park around the museum, and Café Sara operates in the museum.
