About the museum
The main building of the Siikainen local heritage museum is the former elementary school of the church village, completed in 1882 as Siikainen’s first standing elementary school. The municipality owns the building, and the Siikaisten museoyhdistys (Siikainen Museum Association) moved its collections there in 1985. The association held its founding meeting on 18 July 1954 and was entered in the register of associations in 1955.
The schoolhouse displays, among other things, tools for processing flax, wool and milk, and pharmacy equipment. A glass display case shows treasures from a money hoard found in Siikainen and the museum’s oldest object, a Stone Age hammer-axe. The former teacher’s room has been furnished as a classroom with furniture from closed schools, and the other classroom has been built as a weaving room with a loom and a dining table. The Mummula (grandmother’s house) is furnished in 1970s style.
The yard has outbuildings, including a yard row of sheds, a granary, a grain storehouse and an exhibition shed built by volunteers. In summer the museum holds craft workshops, old-fashioned school days and open-air concerts. The museum also has two media guides: an online exhibition on the Siikainen glass verandas and an audio guide to the story of the imaginary maid Alina.
