About the museum
Rymättylä is known for its fishing and especially for its herring. The Saukko herring fishing fleet from Rymättylä made its first fishing trip in the late 1940s, and the herring fishing trips of the people of Rymättylä ended in the mid-1970s. The Silliperinnemuseo Dikseli (Herring Heritage Museum Dikseli) presents this herring fishing history and heritage in the home port of the herring fleet in Röölä. The museum’s name comes from the tool with which herring barrels were hammered shut.
Röödilä mill and sawmill were founded in 1908, and operations began in 1911. Over the decades the building has housed, in addition to milling, sawmill operations and storage for a herring factory, and milling ended in 1980. The building was converted into the Silliperinnekeskus Dikseli (Herring Heritage Centre Dikseli) in 2010, the Myllymuseo (Mill Museum) began in 2016, and the name was changed to Silliperinnemuseo in 2019. The premises of the Meriteatteri (Sea Theatre), the Dikselin Näyttämö (Dikseli Stage), were built in 2013.
The museum displays original dikseli tools, including those from the Saukko ship, as well as works by artists, such as dolls depicting work at the herring factory. The museum is run by the Röölän Kylätoimikunta ry (Röölä Village Committee), and a video in the Dikseli Stage presents the herring journey.
