About the museum

The Sjöfartshuset (Maritime House) in Nagu tells of the town's proud maritime traditions from the early 19th century to the present day. From the mid-19th century, the centre of the country's sailing lay in the Turku archipelago, and the whole community, from the gentry to the crofters, took part in the lively shipping. In the 19th century Nagu was the country's largest sailing parish in terms of tonnage, and new sailing ships were built every year.

The exhibition tells, in words and pictures, of shipbuilding, ships, shipowners and crews. The basic exhibition also presents the history of steamships and cargo ships. One whole room is dedicated to the life and work of the model builder Åke Sandvall, and several of his miniature models are on display.

The museum is run by the City of Pargas and is located on Kyrkostigen in Nagu. The exhibitions "Hur tog man sig fram i Nagu förr" (How People Got Around in Nagu in the Past) and "Minnen och upplevelser från fjärran länder. 200 år av finländsk sjöfart" (Memories and Experiences from Distant Lands: 200 Years of Finnish Shipping) are also shown there.
