About the museum
Lusto is the national responsibility museum for Finnish forest culture, and it is maintained by the Suomen Metsämuseosäätiö (Finnish Forest Museum Foundation). The museum is located in the Punkaharju national landscape on the shore of Lake Puruvesi, beside the esker area. The area is one of the oldest nature reserves in the world, since a crown forest was established at Punkaharju as early as 1843.
The museum building is modern timber construction of the 20th century, and its yard has a small arboretum, a pond of its own and a grill shelter. Hiking routes run nearby, and within walking distance is the tree species park of the Natural Resources Institute, which has more than a hundred tree species.
The core exhibition Metsäsuhteiden maa (Land of Forest Relations) examines the relationship between the forest and people from six perspectives. Lusto also keeps forestry collections and archives, for example the archive of the East Savo Forest Board. Alongside the exhibitions, the museum holds events, work demonstrations and theme days.
