About the museum

The Kerimäki Society (Kerimäki-seura ry) founded the local heritage museum in 1966. At the turn of the 1960s and 1970s the society moved farm buildings to the museum grounds from various parts of Kerimäki. Before that, a granary building was already moved to the area from the nearby Rauhalinna farmyard; it is called the Romu-Heikki granary. The name refers to the district police officer Heikki Häyrynen, who lived in Rauhalinna from 1916 to 1943 and collected objects.

The smoke cabin on the grounds is the older gable end of the main building of the Saarela farm on Herttuansaari, from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition there is a smoke sauna furnished in the style of earlier times, a windmill whose frame dates from the 1850s, and several granaries. Of the granaries, one is furnished as a bridal granary with a kapio chest, another as a hunting and meat granary, and a third as a kitchen granary; the mill granary displays farming and forestry objects.

In summer 2026 the exhibition was renewed under the theme of farming and craft life from 1850 to 1910.
