About the museum
The Parikkalan meijerimuseo was founded in 1980 and was initially located on the Särkisalmen Meijerisaari (Särkisalmi dairy island). In 2004 the museum was moved to the village centre of Parikkala, to the yard of the old kunnantupa next to the local heritage museum. In June 2008 the South Karelia regional association named it South Karelia’s local museum of 2008.
The exhibition space Pikkumeijeri presents the work of village dairies in the early 1900s. The dairy hall displays a wooden butter table, separators and churns, among other things. In the milk room, which served as a storeroom, are the moulds needed for making butter. The adjoining room is furnished as the early 20th-century room of the meijeriska (dairy manager).
