About the museum
The Suomenlinna-museo is located in the Suomenlinna Centre on the shore of Tykistölahti. The museum's main exhibition presents the history of the sea fortress from the 1700s to the present day, through the Swedish, Russian and Finnish periods. It tells of fortress construction, the dry dock, life at a naval base, the fortress's part in the wars, and the years after the civil war.
The exhibition displays personal objects, tools and weapons found on Suomenlinna. Together they give an overall picture of the fortress and of the lives of its residents in the 1700s and 1800s. The museum has a museum shop.
In the museum's auditorium a film of about 25 minutes, the Suomenlinna-elokuva (Suomenlinna film), is shown; it tells of the building of the fortress, its builders and the centuries in the service of three states. The film starts every half hour, and the last showing of the day begins an hour before the museum closes. The museum is maintained by the Ehrensvärd-seura ry (Ehrensvärd Society).
