About the museum
The Talvisotamuseo opened to the public in 1994 on Väinämöisenkatu in Kuhmo. The museum tells of the events of the Winter War (1939–1940) in Kuhmo through objects, photographs, scale models and sound effects, and brings to light the everyday lives of evacuees, civilians, and Finnish and Soviet soldiers.
The basic exhibition covers, among other things, the time before the Winter War, evacuation and the fate of civilians, the history of the village centre, front-line and medical support, battles, and peace and the post-war period. The exhibition is carried by 129 numbered photographs, and photo catalogues are available in Finnish, English, German, Swedish, French, Spanish and Russian.
The largest objects include the 37K/36 anti-tank gun and the armoured artillery tractor T-20 Komsomolets from 1940. The exhibition also contains many objects related to medical support, maps of Kuhmo, four scale models and a researchers’ corner with a reference library. The museum is also the starting point for the tours of Kuhmo’s Winter War sites and battle locations.
