About the museum
The Tervajärven talomuseo (Tervajärvi House Museum) is located in Sumsa village, about 25 km from Sotkamo church village. The Heikkinen family lived in the house from the 17th century onwards, and the house museum opened to the public in 1984. The museum is run by the Municipality of Sotkamo.
The enclosed yard consists of the main building, completed in 1866, two storehouses and a flood-meadow storehouse (luhtiaitta). The oldest buildings are two storehouses, probably built in the 18th century: a meat storehouse and a grain storehouse. The road to the farm was completed in 1958, after which new influences arrived faster than before.
The exhibition in the main building depicts everyday life in the house in the early 1950s. The objects include, among other things, the hearth, a cradle and the bed from the flood-meadow storehouse.
